Valerian officinale or Valerian of the hills or small-leaved Valerian (Valeriana officinalis L. ), also known by the vernacular names of Catgrass, St. George’s Grass, or Herbe à la meurtrie is a perennial herb of the family Valerianaceae. Valerian has a gray-yellow vertical rhizome, covered with long, thick roots. The stem, which can reach 1 m, is cylindrical, hollow, fluted, erect, a little ramy at the top. The leaves, opposite, are deeply divided into a variable number according to the odd subspecies, of oblong, pointed, widely chiseled leaflets. The flowers, irregular, are small and pinkish-white in color. They are visible from May to August, grouped in corymbos at the end of the stem. The fruit is an oval achene, topped with a feathery egret.
