Biennial, hardy, large plant, most often exceeding 1 m., with a non-winged stem. Its large, bright pale green, pennatilobed and wavy, leaves are lined with thorny teeth with a very sharp yellow tip. Those of the base are petiolate, rosette, very large (up to 40 cm). The superiors are smaller and narrower, sheathing. All have numerous white veins on the obverse, giving the impression that the leaf is smeared with milk. The capitules, often solitary, can also be grouped into racemes. They are surrounded by large curved bracts, with very sharp ends, each bract itself having a periphery of small thorns. The florets, all tubulated and five-lobed, are purplish-purple in color. The fruits are shiny, black or yellow mottled achenes, topped with a denticulated egret in a ring at their base. Bloom in late spring.
