Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata L.) is traditionally indicated in minor sleep disorders, nervousness, and anxiety.
The plant was known in the United States since the late 19th century in the treatment of insomnia, hysteria, neurasthenia and epilepsy in the form of mother tincture. In France, it was recommended against war anxiety as early as 1916.
At the neuronal level: Passionflower dry extract has tranquilizing activity (sedative and anxiolytic) by inducing neurodepressant effects of central origin[1, 2]. Passiflora incarnata goes through the GABA system modulation pathway, with affinity for GABA(A) and GABA(B), and with GABA reuptake.
Effect on sleep: Passion flower prolongs sleep, reduces spontaneous motor activity.
